Travel & Tourism Committee/Cologne Project

Co-chairs: Katy Cavaleri and Matt Judge

Indiana's economy and business benefits from relationships already established through Sister Cities ties. The subcommittee works to build a network to remove roadblocks (cultural or otherwise) and to encourage linkages among businesses in Indiana and the Sister Cities. Its goal is to provide training for Indiana business leaders, designed to facilitate effective business and tourism partnerships.

A key program is a joint venture with Cincinnati (German Sister City: Munich) and Louisville (German Sister City: Mainz) to cooperatively market our three midwestern cities as a tourism destination for German travelers. Members of the subcommittee attend the Cologne International Tourism Fair each winter. For details on the initiative, see ThreeSisterCities.com.

Dubbed "From the Heart of Europe to the Heart of America," the cooperative effort of the three volunteer organizations in three states has garnered international recognition. Sister Cities International conferred the Innovation Award for Economic Development on ThreeSisterCities.com during ceremonies at the group's annual conference on July 17, 2004, in Fort Worth, Tex. ThreeSisterCities.com is the trade and tourism coalition of the Sister Cities committees in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. The Indianapolis-Cologne Sister City Committee initiated the tri-city partnership in 2002 with the Louisville-Mainz committee and the Cincinnati-Munich committee as well as the counterpart committees in those three German cities. On-going discussions center on working together to develop successful economic development projects. The coalition was recognized for its initial efforts – developing a web portal, creating a full-color German-language brochure on tourism opportunities in the tri-state region and exhibiting at the International Trade Market in Cologne. Discussions continue to craft a five-year plan to continue implementation of its goal to increase the number of German visitors to the area as well as cross-promotion of the region and on-going partnerships.
